Iowa Harvest Trip 2007

We have just returned from a fun and relaxing trip to Chicago and Iowa City. The first leg of our trip was a 3 night stay in Chicago with Mark, Faith, Spencer and Jonathan. Anne and Brian also joined us the second day in Chicago. We took in a few of the many, many sites in Chicago – a walk along Lake Michigan, a Halloween circus downtown, visits to Millennium Park and Lincoln Zoo, and lots of pie tasting to ensure Mark had a winner in the apple pie contest. Dave and I also went to our friends’ wedding which was lovely.

On Monday we all headed to Iowa City, a 4 hour drive in which Amelia continued to be a champion traveler. Dave and Brian weren’t able to harvest as much as hoped due to some rain but they seemed to always stay busy with various tasks around the farm. Amelia and I were able to see Teresa and Joanna a couple times. Joanna is about 5 months old, very happy and beautiful. It was nice to finally meet her.

On Thursday everyone took the day off to go to the Wilton Ice Cream Parlor, the oldest ice cream parlor in the nation opening in 1867. It was a kick! The couple that owns it is George (87) and his wife Thelma (76). We were constantly entertained by Thelma with history on the business, highlights on what celebrities had dined there and her enthusiasm of having Amelia sit at a little table and chairs with Mickey, Minnie and Donald Duck so we could take pictures of her. Amelia was a sport, after Thelma gave her an ice cream cone!

As always, Anne, Amelia and I did the regular shopping adventure in Iowa City – Prairie Lights, the Artisans Gallery and lunch out. On Saturday afternoon Amelia and I took our first ride in the combine with Brian. Amelia seemed to like the view, tried some field corn and did a little of the steering. I’m sure she’ll be ready to help out in a few years.

The highlight for all I’m sure where nice dinners at home and lots of relaxing. It was a trip that left us wishing we could stay a few more days.

  1. gramma and pop pop

Very nice summary. You forgot to mention, however, how Amelia dazzled us with her brilliance. She kept track of Pop pop and Penny, talked all the time saying whatever was suggested, sang and danced with and without music and generally demonstrated just how smart she is. I think she likes the farm. We were also, of course, impressed with your excellent parenting. You truly enjoy being parents. But with a child like Amelia, who wouldn’t!!! We love you all and missed you as soon as you flew off.
